La artista argentina presenta Touch Me Baby, single de su nuevo álbum To Space (que verá la luz el 31 de octubre). Entre anécdotas de giras, encierros creativos en California y búsquedas personales, Sophie repasa su trayectoria desde Disney hasta Londres y revela cómo su música fusiona deseo, introspección y resiliencia.
La vida de Sophie Oliver parece un mapa lleno de giros y saltos artísticos. Desde sus primeros pasos en Cantaniños —donde con apenas 14 años obtuvo su primer Disco de Oro— hasta su paso por High School Musical: El Desafío y seis años de trabajo junto a Disney, cada etapa fue un aprendizaje. Pero lo más desafiante llegó después: animarse a ser solista, independiente y auténtica.
Hoy presenta Touch Me Baby, un single que forma parte de su nuevo disco To Space. La canción, producida por Ronnie King en California (The Offspring, Snoop Dogg, Mariah Carey) y finalizada en Buenos Aires con Gustavo Buchiniz y Agustín Della Croce, combina estética pop ochentosa, sintetizadores y una fuerte carga emocional.
—¿Cómo nació “Touch Me Baby”?
“El tema surgió de la necesidad de contacto físico y emocional. Había pasado días aislada, extrañando a mi pareja, y me refugié en la memoria sensorial de esos primeros encuentros que erizan la piel. Me imaginé en una disco ochentosa, rodeada de luces y sintetizadores, deseando ese roce que anticipás y que te marca”.
Encerrada durante semanas en un rancho californiano, Sophie atravesó emociones intensas. Hubo días de inspiración desbordante y otros de encierro agobiante. “Pasaron muchas cosas: se perdió un gato, aparecieron dealers cerca, incluso hubo una muerte en la zona. Yo solo quería escribir un álbum. Al principio me sirvió estar aislada, pero después me sentía como un gato enjaulado. Necesitaba ver gente, escuchar música. Esa tensión también terminó en las letras”.
—¿Cómo fue ese proceso compositivo en el desierto?
“Era la primera vez que trabajaba así. Le pasé a Ronnie una lista de canciones que me gustaban y componíamos juntos. A veces él armaba un beat de noche y yo lo escuchaba al día siguiente mientras corría por las montañas. De ahí salieron letras como Believe in You. Muchas mañanas le pedía a la montaña: ‘por favor, dame una canción’, y me la daba. También hubo momentos de enojo, que se transformaron en disparadores creativos. Toda emoción servía”.
Ese trabajo dio forma a To Space, un álbum de diez canciones que combina pop y melancolía, introspección y deseo, y que dará a luz el 31 de octubre. Aunque el título parece aludir a un viaje cósmico, en realidad habla de un recorrido interno.
—¿El disco es más introspectivo que espacial?
“Totalmente. Aunque hable de ir al espacio, en realidad es un viaje hacia adentro. I’m in Control, por ejemplo, es una canción en la que le digo a mi mente que se calle, que yo estoy al mando. Y Believe in You es un recordatorio de que no importa lo que digan los demás: hay que confiar en uno mismo. Es un manifiesto personal”.
La confianza, la vulnerabilidad y la resiliencia son hilos conductores en su música. “Cada vez que muestro una canción siento que me expongo. Es fuerte, porque son letras que nacen de experiencias reales. Pero también es sanador. Cuando alguien me dice que conectó con un tema, siento que el trabajo está hecho”.
—¿Qué esperás que el público se lleve al escuchar To Space?
“Espero que se lleven confianza. Que sepan que la vida es una y que lo importante es estar bien con uno mismo. No es fácil: podés tener cien comentarios positivos y quedarte pensando en el único negativo. Pero hay que entrenar la mente. Ese es el mensaje del disco”.
Sophie Oliver, entre cumbia, tango y pop
Sophie no se limita al pop. En Londres es vocalista de Brixton Cumbia Association, la única banda de cumbia argentina en la ciudad, donde interpreta clásicos noventeros y dosmileros. “Cuando llegué me probaron y les gustó. Desde hace cuatro años soy parte de la banda. Hacemos canciones románticas de Ráfaga o Karicia. Me encanta porque conecta con la comunidad latina”.
—¿Cómo convivís con esa dualidad: cumbia en Londres y pop como solista?
“Para mí es un desafío hermoso. Estudié música profesional en la EMBA, tuve materias de tango y jazz, así que me gusta moverme entre géneros. Acá me conocen como la Gilda de Londres. Un músico profesional estudia todo, y me divierte probar. Canto cumbia, tango, pop… y ahora me animé a hacerlo en inglés, algo que antes me parecía imposible”.
El salto a la independencia
De proyectos colectivos a la soledad del camino propio, Sophie también aprendió a enfrentarse al vértigo.
—¿Cómo vivís el presente como artista solista?
“No es fácil. Venís de un monstruo como Disney, con todo armado, y después quedás sola. Tengo cuatro Discos de Oro, pero animarme a ser independiente fue un salto al vacío. Claro que hay frustraciones, pero también mucha libertad. Cantar me llena, ya sea para diez personas o para treinta mil. La adrenalina es la misma”.
Una definición
Antes de despedirse, Sophie deja una reflexión que la define.
—Si estuvieras en el diccionario, ¿qué palabra serías?
“Guerrera. Me he llevado chascos, pero también gané. Quien no arriesga, no gana. Y yo no pienso dejar de intentarlo”.
