El mundo de la música electrónica está de luto: Dave Ball, cofundador del legendario dúo británico Soft Cell —responsable de himnos como “Tainted Love”— murió el miércoles 22 de octubre de 2025 a los 66 años, de forma pacífica en su domicilio en Londres.
Una vida, múltiples revoluciones
Ball nació como David James Ball el 3 de mayo de 1959 en Chester, Inglaterra, y fue criado en Blackpool tras haber sido adoptado. Su fascinación por la música electrónica surgió cuando escuchó a Kraftwerk y su “Autobahn”, un momento clave que lo lanzó hacia una vida de experimentación sonora.
En 1977 conoció a Marc Almond en Leeds Polytechnic y juntos formaron Soft Cell. Su álbum debut, Non‑Stop Erotic Cabaret (1981), abrió camino con su estilo oscuro, provocador y electrónico, que combinaba pop, soul y art-punk. “Tainted Love” se convirtió en un fenómeno internacional, llevando a Soft Cell a los primeros puestos de las listas y dejando una huella imborrable en el pop de los 80.
Más allá del éxito de los 80
Si bien es en Soft Cell que Ball alcanzó fama masiva, su curiosidad y su talento lo llevaron a explorar otros territorios. En los años 90 cofundó el proyecto The Grid junto a Richard Norris, con éxitos como “Swamp Thing”. También colaboró y produjo para artistas como Kylie Minogue, David Bowie, los Pet Shop Boys y Erasure.
Último capítulo: salud frágil, creatividad intacta
En los últimos años su salud se deterioró: en marzo de 2022 sufrió una caída que le provocó fracturas en la columna y varias costillas, lo que lo tuvo varios meses en coma inducido tras contraer neumonía y sepsis. A pesar de eso, Ball siguió trabajando sin descanso. En agosto de 2025, Soft Cell actuó en el Rewind Festival, y apenas días antes de su muerte habían completado el álbum Danceteria, que será el último de la banda.
Su compañero Marc Almond lo definió como “un genio musical maravillosamente brillante” y confesó que “él estaba en un gran lugar emocional, feliz con el nuevo álbum que terminamos hace unos días”.
El legado que deja Dave Ball
Dave Ball no fue un músico de cara al estroboscópico escenario; su papel estaba detrás de los sintetizadores, los cables, la programación, los efectos, el espacio donde la máquina se convierte en emoción. Su sonido definió lo que sería la nueva ola de la electrónica pop.

Hoy, 24 de octubre de 2025, el mundo pierde a uno de los arquitectos del pop electrónico moderno. Dave Ball se va, pero su sonido —ese click de sintetizador, esa atmósfera entre melancólica y danzante— se queda. En cada disco que pongan, en cada club que enciendan, en cada playlist ochentera o en cada sample de un DJ internacional, habrá un rastro de su ingenio.
