La banda catamarqueña cumple 15 años de trayectoria y se prepara para un show clave en La Trastienda, este viernes 16 de mayo. En una charla distendida, repasaron los comienzos, la elección de su nombre disruptivo y cómo logran sostener la unidad del grupo.

El grupo folclórico Carafea cumple 15 años de carrera y se encuentra en un momento de madurez artística. Con una fuerte identidad sonora que escapa a los estereotipos del género, los músicos catamarqueños se preparan para un show en Buenos Aires, una plaza desafiante para las bandas del interior. En una entrevista íntima, hablaron sobre el origen de su nombre, los prejuicios del público, la convivencia interna y su deseo de mantenerse genuinos.
“Al principio la gente no sabía qué éramos. Algunos pensaban que era una banda de rock o de reggae, otros que hacíamos teatro. No aparecíamos en las tapas, solo el logo, y eso generaba confusión”, contaron.
El nombre Carafea surgió de una broma entre amigos, cuando se filmaban en los ensayos con una cámara digital y se reían de sus gestos y expresiones. “Era un estado, un momento de liberación. Y así se quedó. Hoy para nosotros es más que un nombre: es una forma de vivir la música”, señalan al unísono los miembros de la banda: Rafael Salas (voz y guitarra), Enzo Zelarayán (bajo y coros), Pablo Reinoso (batería) y Chino Décima (guitarra y coros) en una entrevista por zoom con Pogo de Rock.
Un proyecto sin etiquetas
Aunque su raíz es netamente folclórica, Carafea ha sabido conectar con públicos diversos. “Tenemos amigos en el cuarteto, en el rock, y no estamos cerrados a nada. Nos gusta esa libertad de explorar y compartir”, explicaron.
“Desde el inicio sabíamos qué no queríamos, como ponerle un artículo al nombre, que es algo común en el folclore. Queríamos algo distinto, y que perdure. Hoy seguimos siendo los mismos de hace 15 años”.
El desafío de tocar en Buenos Aires
El grupo se presentará en La Trastienda, un espacio histórico de la escena porteña. “Es movilizante traer toda nuestra estructura desde Catamarca. No vamos por la plata, sino por la experiencia, por el encuentro con la gente que nos sigue en redes y que nos pide que llevemos nuestra música allá”.
Con nuevas incorporaciones técnicas y una puesta renovada, Carafea apuesta a un show que combine sus raíces con una mirada contemporánea: “Estamos pasando un gran momento, y este recital en Buenos Aires es un paso más en ese camino. Queremos escribir una página dentro de la música folclórica argentina, sin perder nuestra esencia”.
—Después de 15 años como grupo, ¿cómo sienten el presente de la banda?
—Con mucha madurez, tanto musical como de convivencia entre nosotros. Buenos Aires siempre fue un lugar donde quisimos llevar nuestra música, mutarla un poco, escribir nuevas páginas. Y pensamos que era el lugar indicado para arrancar este festejo. Tenemos muchos amigos y colegas que nos hablaban maravillas de La Trastienda, nos sedujo la idea y se fue dando todo: los 15 años, la madurez, las ganas de festejar. Ya estamos armando fechas posteriores, pero sin dudas el 16 de mayo va a ser una noche especial.
—¿Cómo arman el setlist para un show tan importante?
—Siempre es un debate (risas). Por suerte tenemos muchas canciones en los tres discos, y la gente nos pide mucho temas del primero y segundo. Incluso ya los tenemos incluidos en el show actual. Seguramente vamos a tener algunos invitados también. Va a ser una linda noche desde las canciones, y esperamos que la gente la pase hermoso.
—¿Les hacen arreglos nuevos a los temas viejos para tocarlos en vivo?
—Sí, siempre tratamos de darle un refresco a cada canción. Pero también respetamos lo que la gente ya tiene en el oído. No nos alejamos demasiado porque sabemos que eso es lo que muchos vienen a buscar. Tratamos de mantener la esencia, pero con un aire nuevo.
—¿El proceso compositivo cambió con los años?
—Sí, tuvo una madurez como te decía antes. Siempre con la esencia del folclore que amamos y con el que nos formamos. En estos años hemos adquirido mucha música, viajando, descubriendo artistas. Eso nos abrió la cabeza y nos dio herramientas para nuevas creaciones. Tenemos una identidad: el power de la banda al cantar y el matiz de mi voz que a la gente le gusta. Esa combinación genera una mixtura que nos representa.
—¿Y qué lugar ocupan las vivencias personales en las letras?
—Estoy aprendiendo a escribir mis propias canciones. Tengo muchas cosas para decir, porque amamos nuestra tierra, nuestros paisajes, la gastronomía, nuestras familias. Es un proceso nuevo para mí, y lo estoy atravesando con respeto. Canto canciones de otros con admiración, y si algún día saco las mías, quiero que sean igual de sentidas.
—¿Sienten que Catamarca está poco representada en el folclore nacional?
—Sí, lo charlamos esta semana con varios colegas. Por eso le pusimos “Catamarca” a nuestro último disco. Queremos que nuestra provincia tenga su lugar, como lo tienen Santiago o Salta. Hay mucha música hermosa acá, de compositores históricos y actuales. Un 80% del repertorio del último disco es de autores catamarqueños. Queremos que esas canciones sean conocidas, como en su momento lo fue “Zamba para olvidarte”.
—¿Cómo ven el presente del folclore en esta era de consumo rápido y redes sociales?
—Todo cambió. Antes una consagración en un festival te garantizaba laburo, ahora no tanto. La información llega más rápido, pero también se olvida más rápido. Por eso hay que adaptarse: sumar gente al equipo, generar contenido visual, estar presentes en redes como Instagram y TikTok. Aprendimos que hay que disfrutar el proceso, invertir tiempo y plata, hacerlo con seriedad y con amor.
—¿Cómo fue la experiencia de hacer colaboraciones con otros artistas?
—Muy positiva. Aprendimos mucho. Hicimos un feat con Lázaro Caballero en Catamarca que explotó en redes, casi 10 millones de visitas. Después vinieron otros con el Indio Lucio Rojas, Los Nocheros, Canto 4, Gaby Morales, Cristian Herrera… Siempre con respeto y admiración mutua. Muchos de ellos también están aprendiendo esta nueva dinámica, como nosotros.
—¿Notan que el público joven es más abierto a distintos géneros musicales?
—Sí, totalmente. Antes éramos más cerrados, como la sociedad. Ahora la gente escucha de todo: folclore, rock, pop. En los festivales conviven muchos estilos, y eso está buenísimo. La música une, y mientras más puertas abramos, mejor.
